Sanctum Umbra

Sanctum Umbra

A meditation on sacred spaces and the shadows they cast. This piece explores the intersection of the divine and the profane, where light enters through Gothic windows only to be consumed by the darkness within.

Ink on parchment

24×36"

Process

Created over the course of three months, this work began as a study of the abandoned cathedral of Saint-Étienne. Each line was drawn with deliberate intention, allowing the ink to pool and flow naturally, creating organic shadows that speak to the building's forgotten prayers.

Inspiration

Inspired by the writings of Georges Bataille and the architectural photography of Hélène Binet, this piece seeks to capture not just the physical decay of sacred architecture, but the spiritual weight that lingers in abandoned holy places.
